Shopify vs WooCommerce for Small Businesses

Short answer: Shopify and WooCommerce are both solid ways to run an online store for a small business. Shopify is a hosted platform where the software, hosting and updates come together, and you pay a subscription. WooCommerce is a plugin that turns a WordPress website into a store, so you own more of the stack and you also take on more of the upkeep. Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on who will look after the store, how much you want to customize, and whether the store is part of an existing website.

What each one actually is

Shopify

Shopify is an all-in-one hosted store. You sign up, pick a plan, and the platform handles hosting, security updates and checkout. Themes and apps extend it, and many of those apps are paid. It is the option most owners choose when they want the store to work without thinking about servers.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce runs on WordPress. Your store lives on hosting you choose, alongside the rest of your website, and you can extend it with plugins. That flexibility is the appeal, and the trade-off is that someone has to keep WordPress, the theme and the plugins updated, backed up and secure. Our Website Care plan, at US$69 per month, cover that kind of WordPress upkeep.

How to compare them, honestly

Getting started

Shopify is usually quicker to launch because the platform decisions are already made for you. WooCommerce is quicker only if you already have a WordPress site and someone comfortable managing it. If you are starting from nothing, budget time for hosting, a theme and checkout setup on the WooCommerce side.

Ongoing cost shape

Shopify costs are mostly predictable: a platform subscription plus any paid apps and payment fees. WooCommerce has no platform subscription of its own, but you pay for hosting, and premium plugins or themes can add their own fees. We will not quote either company’s current prices here, because they change by plan and region — check each provider before you decide. What we publish is our own work: Ecommerce Setup at US$199 / US$299 / US$399 by platform count, one-time, and monthly plans of Ecommerce Care US$79/month or Ecommerce Growth US$249/month per store (USD).

Setup vs. storefront scope: US$199 / US$299 / US$399 Setup covers account/catalog/listing setup, not a full custom storefront build. Ecommerce Storefront is US$1,499; scope confirmed in your quote (see Pricing).

Ownership and portability

With WooCommerce you own the site files and the database on your hosting. With Shopify you own your products, customers and content, but the store runs on their platform, so leaving means rebuilding elsewhere. Either way, your accounts, domains and payment accounts should be registered in your business name.

Customization

WooCommerce can be shaped to unusual requirements because it sits on WordPress, which is useful for stores that need specific workflows. Shopify covers most common needs well, and heavy customization there often means paid apps or custom work. For a straightforward catalog, both are more than capable.

Selling beyond your own store

Many small businesses sell both on their own store and on marketplaces such as Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Etsy, Temu, Shein or TikTok Shop, where those channels are open to them. Both Shopify and WooCommerce can connect to other channels through apps and plugins, but availability and quality of those connectors vary, so confirm the specific integration you need before you commit.

Which one fits which business

  • Choose Shopify if you want the fewest moving parts, you are comfortable with a monthly platform fee, and your store needs are typical.
  • Choose WooCommerce if you already have a WordPress website, you want the store and the site in one place, or you need flexibility that a hosted platform would fight you on.
  • Do not choose on features alone. Ask who will update it, back it up and fix it when something breaks. The cheaper-looking option is rarely cheaper if nobody is looking after it.

If the store is only one of several places you might sell, read online store versus marketplace before you pick a platform. And if you are unsure what to build first, see what a minimum viable online store looks like.

Is Shopify better than WooCommerce for a small business?

It depends. Shopify is simpler to run day to day because hosting and updates are included. WooCommerce costs less in platform fees and gives you more control, but someone has to maintain the WordPress site behind it.

Can I move from one to the other later?

Yes, but it is a project, not a switch. Products and customers can usually be exported, while your design, apps and some settings have to be rebuilt. Pick carefully, but do not let the fear of switching delay a launch.

Do I need a developer for either one?

For a simple store, often no. You need help when you want custom features, unusual shipping rules or connections to other systems. Our setup service handles the build so you can manage day-to-day content yourself.

What does Abiyas charge to set one up?

Can either platform sell on Amazon or Etsy too?

Both can connect to other sales channels through apps or plugins, but each integration differs and not every channel is available to every seller. Confirm the specific connection before you rely on it.
